VOLUNTEERS spent up to ten hours pumping water off the site of an annual carnival following last week’s heavy rain to ensure it could go ahead as planned.

Thousands of people turned out to enjoy Copmanthorpe Carnival thanks to the efforts of organisers and helpers who managed to pump hundreds of litres of water off the site at the village’s Recreation Centre.

The annual event, which raises money for the Copmanthorpe Recreation Centre Charity, went ahead despite heavy rain on Friday, with only minor changes – including a relocated stage and rides.

Laura Sledmore, one of the organisers, said: “It went really well, absolutely amazing.

“Considering we had a lot of rain on Friday, we had a team of volunteers spend nine or ten hours pumping water from the site, and by about 3pm we decided we would go ahead with it.

“We had about four or five thousand people turn up, and the bands played a good six hours, it was a great day.”

I am confused. I never saw thousands at the Carnival, was it a Carnival or a music festival?
Well done to all those that helped to make sure the event went ahead .
A shame that the carnival has lost its true origins and turned into a Minster Fm , music festival instead . The price of progress I wonder ?
