2pm The Sledmere Charity car boot this Sunday has been cancelled because the pitch is water logged. It will be re-scheduled for later in the year.

1.30pm - City of York Council has confirmed its regular maintenance programme for gulleys and culverts is continuing as normal today, and staff have been put on alert to deal with any areas where surface water becomes a problem as a priority.

1.20pm - Firefighters have taken more than 50 flood-related calls from residents in East Yorkshire, with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service saying it was receiving an average of ten calls an hour.

They are mainly from Goole and the surrounding areas, with Howden School and Airmyn Primary School, in Goole, among those affected by the bad weather.

1.15pm - Yorkshire Water says it is carrying out a "massive operation" to help people who have been hit by flooding.

The company expects up to 50mm of rain in some parts of the county today and says it has checked its 700 waste water facilities to make sure they can cope with the downpours, put extra staff in its contact centre and "on the ground", delivered hundreds of sandbags to the worst-affected areas and checked sewers are not blocked. The firm called at 140 properties yesterday to help clean up after flooding.

10.45am - Heavy rain has forced the cancellation of tomorrow's York 800 flotilla and Sunday's Dragon Boat races on the River Ouse.

Sally Burns, City of York Council's director of communities and neighbourhoods, said it was due to forecasts of prolonged heavy rain today and expected high river levels.

She said the flotilla event may be rescheduled for a weekend in August.
