White Swan refurbishment plans to be revealed

PLANS to refurbish the White Swan Hotel in York will go on public display later this month.

The Graham Family trust, which owns the building in Piccadilly, wants to create 14 apartments on the upper floors and new shops on the ground floor, as revealed by The Press earlier this year.

The firm had intiially considered knocking down the building, which dates back to 1912 but has been empty for almost 30 years, but it amended its plans after a rethink sparked by public opposition.

A public exhbition showcasing the new plans will be held at the Quaker Meeting House in Friargate from 2pm to 8pm on Wednesday, July 18.

Jason Garrod from Cj2 Ltd, agent for the owners, said: “We will be consulting the public on our plans in the coming weeks before submitting a planning application to the council later this summer.”

Yes, it's been closed and an eyesore for far too long.

After years and years of completely ignoring the people and Council of York, I wonder why the owners are suddenly concerned about what we want.

Too be fair, the owners can do what they want, its their building. I dont understand why people are that bothered anyway ??!!

People are bothered because it's been an eyesore for years in the centre of York.

What I don't get, is why when you own such a building, do you leave it to rot for decades?

Whats betting that any scheme put together will carefully avoid the issue of "Affordable" to the detriment of the project as a whole. Probably by downscaling the full potential of the building.

Well why not. The trouble and difficulties that arise when shoehorning social housing among prestigious town flat living is as clear as a boil on your bum, and just as uncomfortable for the developer and the purchasers. Probably making it impossible to market as well.

We shall see ?

It was all damp, rotten and creaking when I was last in it nearly 30 years ago. I dread to think what a state it will be in now! I bet there's an army of rats living down in that old bar in the basement.

Should of left....? Do you mean "Should have left....?"
I reckon that it would make a lovely multistorey bike park. staffed, secure and sheltered with commercially modest parking fees.

Truly you are unhinged or punctured in your case.

One assumes, possibly naively, that the building will be somewhat restored and refurbished before being let.
