Widow could lose almost £500 after travel firm goes bust

A WIDOW from York is counting the cost after a travel firm went into liquidation leaving her £469 out of pocket.

Joyce Rawson, 80, of Wain Close, Huntington, is one of many holiday makers who have been hit by the problems plaguing Bradford-based coach company Gain Travel.

Mrs Rawson, who had paid £389 for a trip to see the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Island, said she feared she would not be the only person in York to have been affected.

She said: “We were due to set off on Sunday and it was only when I phoned up to finalise arrangements that I found out what was going on.

“We have been going with the firm on holidays for years and we have had some really wonderful holidays and I just can’t understand how this has happened. The last time I went away with them was in April on a trip to Bristol and we had a fantastic time and there was no sign then that there was anything wrong.

“I have gone on my own a number of times and you always meet up with lovely people.”

Mrs Rawson, who also paid an £80 deposit on a holiday to Norfolk in September, said: “I am a pensioner and I really can’t afford to lose the money. I’m sure there will be a lot of people who don’t realise that this has happened.”

She is still waiting to hear from the firm about whether she would get any of her money back.

Gain Travel ceased trading on June 8.

Insolvency practitioners Rushtons of Shipley, which placed Gain Travel into liquidation, said a letter would be sent to customers and creditors soon.

On the coach travel firm’s website, a notice announced the news, blaming “very difficult trading conditions”.

“This means that no further holidays will be operated by Gain Travel and if you do have a booking with us, you will be contacted shortly by our appointed administrators.”

Two easy rules when booking Fights/holidays.....
.......Pay by credit card as you are insured against loss and make sure the firm is ABTA bonded....Simple !!

Neither, it's his spelling that needs improving.

My pre-pay debit card has insurance as well. Never used it, but good to know it is there.

I and some of my friends are caught up in this, although we just stand to lose our deposits.

Many local and regional coach companies are not ABTA bonded so not so 'simple'. Many people have used Gain, Eddie Brown's and others for decades with no problem and had excellent service.

My travel insurer, and I suspect most others only cover the customer cancelling and not the coach company being insolvent.

The point about paying by credit card is very valid.

It may be possible that the administrators can negotiate with another company to take on some of Gain's booked holidays.

I will be attending a meeting of creditors later this month when hopefully it may be a little clearer how the administrators are to proceed.

Have you ever considered when she and her husband were your age they may have been in much the same boat as yourself. They will have survived a world war and struggled through the years after the war of rationing low pay, and did not know where the next meal was coming from and were not able to pop down the social and get a hand out.

Have you considered they may not have had a Sky TV subcription, the latest iphone or designed clothing.

Have you considered they may have prefered to put money away in savings and pensions to provide the things you are envious of now.

If you consider how you provide for the future, when you get to be 80 years old you may be able to do the same.

Excuse me but if she is 80 this means that at the end of the War she would only have been 13 or 14. I am sick of people using the war as an excuse for not criticising pensioners.
I would love ONE holiday this year but me and my husband although both working full time cannot afford it.

Why on earth should the lady be criticised, and what does it matter her age at the end of the war !
The point is that she has worked for the privilege of being able to take these holidays.

Perhaps she couldn't afford a holiday when she was your age.

Keep working and save a bit and have some patience.

I agree she shouldn't be criticised for taking holidays if she wants but I believe the point that big boy york was making is she is saying she is only a poor pensioner and can't afford to lose that amount of money, but she can afford to go on 3 holidays a year. I must admit that did cross my mind when I read the article but still think it's a shame if she loses the money. Not many people can 'afford' to lose hundreds of pounds. These days you need to be really careful who you book with and check they are ABTA and/or ATOL protected.

I travelled with Gain on a number of occasions and i know they fought tirelessly to save the business which they loved and worked in for 25 years, I have seen total un truths, written and upsetting and total fabrication of the situation. There is two sides to every story, where is woolworths,Habitat, Game,Clintons Cards.(Thomas Cook fighting all they can to stay afloat, there will be no small family firms soon!
