North Yorkshire tourism chiefs look forward to arrival of Olympic torch

THE arrival of the Olympic flame in North Yorkshire next week is a fantastic opportunity to show the region to the world, say tourism chiefs.

The torch’s Yorkshire journey will begin in the village of Hinderwell near Whitby at 9am next Monday, from where it will make its way through the region, arriving in Selby on June 19 before coming to York, later that day for an overnight stay.

The head of the region’s tourist board is urging residents to come out in force and support the relay runners who will carry the flame through the streets.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire said: “With less than a week to go until the torch arrives in Yorkshire we are appealing to communities along the route to come out and join in the celebrations for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

“The torch will be taking in some of the most beautiful places in the UK and this is our chance to show our great county off to the world. With the torch travelling to within 15 minutes of over 90 per cent of the population of Yorkshire, we hope as many people as possible will go out to see this amazing spectacle.”

One of the many torchbearers in our region will be Mr Verity’s own nominee Paralympic wheelchair racer Hannah Cockcroft.

On its first day, the torch convoy will travel through Lythe, Sandsend and Whitby before embarking on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Pickering.

It will then continue its journey through Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington and Beverley.

On Tuesday, June 19 it will go through Brough, Goole, Camblesforth, Selby, Monk Fyrston, Barkston Ash, Tadcaster, Boston Spa, Wetherby, Knaresborough, Harrogate and Ripon, finishing the day in York at the Racecourse for a huge evening concert.

On Wednesday the torch will board the Scots Guardsman in York and travel on the steam train to Thirsk, it will then continue through Northallerton, Aiskew, Bedale, Leyburn and Richmond.

‘we are appealing to communities along the route to come out and join in the celebrations for this once-in-a-lifetime moment’

Getting desperate for people to be interested are we?
The ongoing propaganda machine is not working as well as it should?
People sick of the incessant bombardment of the event?
Good timing for London eh ie. Recession?

The Olympic movement has a fantastic business model that is entirely in their favour:
The hosting country builds all the infrastructure and pays you to hold the games in that location.

The hosting country pushes an Act of Parliament through that effectively monopolises any business with the designated area.

The Olympic movement uses big bully legal tactics on any business/individual that they think contravenes the Act of Parliament irrespective of how long the business has been trading (the case of the café which has been called ‘The Olympic Café’ for many years, owner had a civil court summons just for having the name as the Act covered the area for where his business had been for years).

Big business jumps on the gravy train and you have to enter/leave the stadium via the business partner’s outlets.

All monies from ticket sales are kept by the Olympic movement as are all TV rights/sponsorship monies etc

There have been in the past allegations of corruption and bribery within the organisation.
Apparently it’s all about sport not money/business!
You decide!

"A fantastic opportunity to show the region to the world"? Well, good luck: nowhere the torch has visited yet has managed to do this. Most of what we've seen so far is a clump of track-suited z-listers (who can't run) wobbling along grim roads through humdrum localities and industrial estates, occasionally doing something daft like rowing a boat with the thing or sitting on a narrow gauge railway with it. Usually in pouring rain. It's contrived and stunningly unimaginative (of course it went to a viking festival in Stromness - what else is there to do there?).

So what is our region going to do differently, that will galvanise the imagination of the world? Why would the world still be watching?

This whole thing is a bit OTT!
The Olympics are a farce, it all about big business. Some sports should not be in at all. They're putting men's hide and seek and syncronised **** in for the 2016 show.

Agree. The only people free to watch the flame go past are the economically inactive. Most of us will be at work trying to pay for the Olympics. Pure hype.

I enjoy the irony of coe-lympic flames being sold on eBay (£3,000 or more, you suckers!); however the bearers of the wands had to buy them for £250 if they wished to keep them, so good luck to their enterprise.
There is no end to the mean, money-grabbing efforts of coe and Locog to turn what was once an international brotherhood of sporting excellence into a corporate festival of greed.

Judging by the lack of olympic enthusiasm shown above, (and I thought I was alone!) maybe the torch-a-thon could be quietly cancelled in York, and nobody need ever know.

Welcome to Yorkshire promoting the Olympic torch, excuse me whilst I vomit. The Olympics are all about sport.
Welcome to Yorkshire are linked to the Countryside Alliance who's sole aim is the reintroduction of fox, hare and otter hunting. Where is the sport in that?
Oh and they also supported controlling buzzards to protect pheasants. So they could kill the pheasants. Tossers.
