Police issue safety warning to bikers

BIKERS are being urged to ride safe this bank holiday weekend as new statistics show the shocking toll of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured on the region’s roads.

Extra police will be patrolling the main motorcycle routes throughout the county over the extended bank holiday weekend as hundreds of bikers are expected to descend on North Yorkshire.

They will be carrying out speed checks as well as handing out advice on the dangers of irresponsible riding.

In the past six years, 79 bikers have been killed in York and North Yorkshire with a further 622 seriously injured.

Insp Vicky Taylor, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “Motorcyclists are more than welcome to come to North Yorkshire as long as they stay within the law and ride responsibly.

“Over the years, far too many bikers have lost their lives on our roads and it is vitally important that we try and prevent any further unnecessary deaths.

“Speed limits are there for a very good reason and I urge all road users - not just bikers - to stick to the rules of the road and help prevent any further tragedies.

“Too many bikers don’t make it home. Make sure that you aren’t one of them.”
