ONE of York’s oldest residents has celebrated her 105th birthday by taking part in a care home karaoke.

Great-grandmother Hilda Elsegood, who has more than 30 grandchildren and great grandchildren, celebrated at Meadowbeck Care Home, Osbaldwick Lane on Tuesday, ahead of her birthday tomorrow.

Mrs Elsegood is the oldest resident at Meadowbeck, but still regularly wins bingo, ludo and snakes and ladders. She makes her own greetings cards and has won a cup for winning a bowling tournament held at the home.

But she was not the only one celebrating. Fellow Meadowbeck resident the Rev Leonard Melling enjoyed a sip of champagne on his 99th birthday.

Liz Mayes, carer and activities co-ordinator at Meadowbeck, said: “They both had a joint party at the home and they’re having family parties this weekend.

On Tuesday we had karaoke all afternoon until 8pm, with champagne, wine and Hilda’s favourite sherry and a buffet. Leonard gave a speech saying what a wonderful place this was and how happy he was, and Hilda just sang along to everything.”
