ONE of York’s biggest nightclubs is to close down next month for a major refurbishment.
The Gallery, in Clifford Street, will call time for the final time in the middle of the Jubilee celebrations on Monday, June 4.
The new owners will then begin a big revamp, and it is understood it will reopen later in the summer.
The Luminar Group Ltd has applied to City of York Council to vary its premises licence to allow for a series of internal alterations, including the relocation of bars, the removal and replacement of fixed seating, and the removal and relocation of the DJ’s booth. Anyone wanting to object has until June 19 to write to the council’s licensing services department.
A Luminar spokesman said the Gallery had been known in the past as GG Barnums and Silks, and “seen some amazing sights”.
He said: “So whether a regular at Barnums, Silks or The Gallery, the Jubilee long weekend represents the last chance to celebrate an end of an era, toast the good times and remember the girls and boys you met while having the time of your life.
“The new owners have exciting plans for the venue and are looking forward to bringing the best bar and club experience to Clifford Street.”
The Press reported last month how the club’s future had been secured after the owners agreed measures to tackle alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder.
Police slated the club last year after crime rocketed by 1,050 per cent in the wake of cheap drinks promotions.
But officers’ demand for a review of the licence was withdrawn after the owners agreed to some of the toughest licensing conditions of any nightclub in York, including an earlier closure time and lower maximum capacity during cheap drinks promotion nights, and barriers to be placed outside the club an hour before it is due to shut, with two members of staff in high-visibility bibs to be deployed every evening.
