YORK City fans unable to make the trip to Wembley packed into pubs and bars to cheer on their team and celebrate a momentous win.
At city’s Bootham Crescent home, hundreds of cheering fans were in the Pitchside bar to witness York’s 2-1 victory over Luton Town, and their return to the Football League.
Meanwhile, city centre pubs reported a good-natured atmosphere among fans who were out in force to watch the game on big screens.
Helen O’Kane, duty manager at O’Neill’s in Low Ousegate, said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic afternoon. We have been busy all day and there’s been a great atmosphere. Everyone has been so good natured.”
Jeff Hinds, 65, of Rawcliffe, was one of those who watched the game in The Terrace in Stonebow. He said: “I have made a day of it and it’s been a brilliant atmosphere. The best team won.”
Meanwhile, City supporter Jimmy Nicholls, from Badger Hill, who was in Thailand when the match kicked off, said: “What a game. I managed to talk a bar into putting it on the big screen.
“I can’t think of many better places to watch it – apart from Wembley itself. I need a day on the beach to recuperate.”
