Next Lord Mayor of York to be sworn in

Updated: YORK’S new Lord Mayor will be officially appointed at a ceremony tomorrow.

Huntington and New Earswick councillor Keith Hyman will take over from the current mayor, Coun David Horton.

Coun Paul Firth will assume the title of Sheriff of York from Alan Deller.

City of York Council’s chief executive, Kersten England, will mark the day by reading a proclamation in the city centre and more than 150 guests will attend the annual council meeting at Guildhall, starting at 11am, where the new mayor will be appointed.

Following the ceremony, the civic party will process through the centre of the city, accompanied by the York Waits – musicians who take their name from the city’s ancient band – and eight members of the York Guard.

Why do we need a Lord Mayor?? What do they do for the city?? Expensive luxury if you ask me - get rid.

A waste of public funds.
Lord Mayors are out of date in the 21st century.
They just suck money from the public purse.

Apart from being York's public figurehead, the Lord Mayor remains a working Councillor for his/her Ward, albeit politically neutral for their year of office. The Lord Mayor also has the sometimes thankless task of chairing the Council's full monthly meetings.

Better to be sworn in than sworn at...

Those who object to the position of Lord Mayor sadly exhibit the lack of imagination too often shown by some in this historic city.
We need to use the Lord Mayor , the pageantry, the ancient robes, York Waits etc more! Anything to make a visit to York even more memorable.
By making the City "THE PLACE" to visit in England, will attract the people who stay the extra day ( and spend the extra pound).
More Vision , More Imaginative Ideas and less grumps please.

Figure head for the council - bring tradition to the city - Lord Mayor's charity raises a hell of a lot of money for York charities - hosts receptions for YCFC, the list goes on - but we have one because we are honoured that we can - many Cities would love to have a LORD Mayor.
