Jobless total falls in York and North and East Yorkshire

UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen by almost 1,400 across York, North Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire.

Latest figures showed today that the number of people claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance in York fell between March and April by 143 to 3,472, or 2.5 per cent of those eligible. That percentage is no worse than in April last year.

The number of claimants in North Yorkshire fell by 854 to 9,658, or 2.6 per cent of those eligible, compared with 2.4 per cent in April last year. In East Riding of Yorkshire, the number fell by 404 to 6,989, or 3.3 per cent, which compares with 3 per cent in April last year.

In Ryedale, the number of people claiming JSA fell by 126 to 637, or 2 per cent of those eligible, while in Selby, the number fell by 67 to 1,637 or 3.1 per cent.

The local figures are better than those for both the region and the country. In Yorkshire and The Humber as a whole, about 4.8 per cent of those eligible were claiming JSA in April, down by 0.1 per cent and across Great Britain, the figure was 4 per cent, down by 4.1 per cent.

There is a clear seasonal element to the drop in unemployment locally and nationally, with similar drops happening between March and April last year.

Nationwide, unemployment has fallen by 45,000, with a jobless total of 2.6 million in the quarter to March, the lowest since last summer, and the number of people claiming JSA fell by 13,700 to 1.59 million

Our political masters continue to blur the edges of reality.

Just yesterday it was revealed that part-time employment had risen four times and men working part-time or under employed doubled.

Austerity is not working and neither are over three million people.

part time work has increased not full time so some of those now working part time may still be claiming some benefits. I told the JC+ Muppet once that I wouldn't apply for any job that didn't pay more than the weekly JSA and how would they work out what extra benefit I should get if one week I did just 2 hours and the next 16 or 30, they couldn't answer.

I'm not working which in my book means I'm unemployed but I don't sign on so by their definition I'm not. Hallelujah!

This sums up the Tory policy regarding disability benefits.

Take up thy bed and walk my son. Thou art cured, until at least your appeal against blatant discrimination.

However its for the nations good that we can massage the figures.

You can only claim JSA for six months contributory based and then nothing.
