Travel views of child heart surgery services users ‘must be considered’

THE panel of health experts who will decide on the future of child heart surgery services in our region shave been advised to take into account where local people would prefer to travel.

The Joint Chairs of Primary Care Trusts are due to decide in two months whether the life-saving surgery should stay at Leeds General Infirmary or move to Newcastle.

However, an independent group which provides advice to the Secretary of State on contested proposals for health has said that vital research on where local people would travel to, if the facilities in Leeds were forced to close, should be considered.

The recommendation comes following a report by Price Waterhouse Coopers, which showed people across the region said they would prefer to travel to units in Liverpool or Birmingham instead of Newcastle.
