Holgate windmill up for national award

Holgate windmill Holgate windmill

AN HISTORIC windmill in York has been short-listed for a national award.

The Biffa Awards recognise the people who transform their communities, and Holgate Windmill, pictured, has been selected from almost 100 applicants in the Cultural Facilities category.

The windmill’s preservation society received over £40,000 in funding from Biffa Award to complete the final stages of the restoration, and install safety fencing and shutter frames.

The windmill is one of four sites to be shortlisted for the award, and the winner, to be announced at a ceremony in Kent on September 27, will receive a £2,000 prize.

I'm sorry but these turbines are an eye-sore. They are heavily subsidised by the Government, kill rare birds and make a racket keeping people living near by awake at night. Their blades blot out the sun intermittently creating a strobing effect.

NOT IN MY BACK YARD.

This is a windmill not a wind turbine. I do hope you know the difference.

Also this is a restoration of a historic building, not a new building that dramatically alters the landscape and the lives of those nearby.

Very bemused by that first post! Although I have wondered myself if it's noisy to live next to. I went past the other day and commented on how much better it looks now. It was really creepy and definitely an eyesore before they started restoring it, they've done an excellent job.

BUDA, What the hell has turbines to do with this article. It's only connection is that it has sails. As for Nimby's, along with do- gooders, the ruination of this country.

I found BUDA's tongue in cheek comment amusing, some people need to lighten up a bit!

Feels that Buda has a good point.....imagine the outcry if/when York City Council wants to dot wind turbines around the city.....only a matter of time me thinks!

Indeed.

I'm sure the comments I put where made by people living next to windmills in the past, just as people do now for turbines.

Can I leave my bike in your front garden if I visit the mill?

Even if wheat or corn is to be ground in this mill @eight hours a day, the noise will be minimal!
