YORK City may have won at Wembley, but they lost to a team from TV soap Emmerdale at a fundraising charity match at Bootham Crescent yesterday.

The Emmerdale team, which included actors James Hooton (Sam Dingle), Adam Thomas (Adam Barton), and Luke Roskell (Sean Spencer), beat the York City Allstars 3-1.

The Allstars team included Shed Seven frontman Rick Witter, former City stars Darren Dunning, Christian Fox and Marc Thompson, and Dave Flett, York City reporter for The Press.

City’s youth team goalkeeping coach Pete Glanville, aged 78, played for the first half.

About 600 fans turned out to watch the match, raising money for two charities, Once Upon A Smile, which offers respite breaks for children who have lost loved ones, and The Island, which offers support for vulnerable eight to 13-year-old children in York.

Organiser Paula Stainton, of York City In The Community, said: “It was a fantastic turn-out. It was an even game of light-heartened entertainment all for good causes.”

Emmerdale’s goals were scored by Nick Reynolds and Katie Fenton, while Darren Kelly replied for the Allstars.

Reynolds said: “It was a great game, but I’m a bit disappointed I didn’t get my hat-trick.”
