Cycle escort for Olympic Torch in York

READERS of The Press are being given the chance to be part of history by cycling behind the Olympic flame as it comes through the city on June 19.

York is one of only two cities in the UK, along with Cambridge, to be granted permission for a cycle escort for the torch on its 70-day tour of the country, ahead of the London games.

City of York Council said 200 places will be available, with half of them going to readers of The Press in a free-to-enter draw.

Coun Sonja Crisp said: “It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the Torch Relay as it brings a taste of the Olympic spirit to Great Britain.

“We’ve worked hard to offer residents another fantastic way of sharing in the build-up to the 2012 London Games which will add to the spectacle.”

Restrictions include that entrants must be over 16 on June 19 and have a roadworthy bike.

Cyclists will not be allowed to ride tandems, tow trailer bikes or carry a second person on the day.

To apply, send your name and address, contact number, date of birth and reason why you would like to be part of the celebration to cycling.city@york.gov.uk or by post to City of York Council, Sustainable Transport Service FREEPOST (YO239) York Y017ZZ by May 31.

Winners will be contacted by Friday, June 8.
