HUNDREDS of sheep threatened by rising flood-waters in a North Yorkshire field have been rescued by firefighters.

About 300 ewes and lambs were trapped on an island created by the rising River Ure at Middleham Bridge, this morning.

Crews from Leyburn used inflatable bridges and ladders to help free about 200 of the animals, before the rising water made the operation too dangerous.

The remaining sheep were eventually brought to safety with the help of a tractor and a high-level trailer, driven by a local farmer.
