Hundreds on City of York Council danger register

MORE than 300 people and 65 properties in York now feature on a council danger register, The Press can reveal.

The City of York Council Staff Warning Register warns staff to take care around the individuals and properties, and to consider taking someone with them when arranging a meeting.

The majority of the 314 people on the register are known to be violent and are sometimes living under conditions imposed as part of an official public protection plan because they pose a risk to the public or because they have been aggressive or violent to council staff or other public officers.

Most of the properties are those where there are dangerous dogs or there may be a risk of discarded syringes.

The number of people on the register has risen significantly since its early days in 2005, when 58 people and 53 buildings were listed.

At that time, incidents involving council staff included a member of staff being threatened by a man with a replica gun and another by a man carrying a bow and arrow. However, City of York Council has refused to give any details of recent incidents.

A spokesperson for Veritau, which compiles the staff warning register, said: “The safety of council employees is paramount. The register was set up in 2005, so over the last seven years awareness has grown along with the number of users. Although each record is reviewed periodically, as it would be unfair to leave a name on if someone has learned to manage their behaviour, they are likely to remain ‘live’ for a period of time.” Of the 314 people on the staff warning register, 282 are known to be male. Five are children under 18.

The biggest single group of entrants includes those considered to pose a risk of violence by the probation service, usually before leaving prison on licence.

Nineteen of the people listed are known to live in the centre of York in the Guildhall ward, 18 in Heworth, 16 in the Westfield and Holgate wards, 15 in Clifton and 13 in Fishergate. The council was unable to confirm where 171 of those on the list live.

Of the properties listed, 12 are in the Westfield ward, eight in Heworth, six in Clifton, five in Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without, four in Dringhouses and Woodthorpe and four in Huntington and New Earswick.

I'm not surprised at the areas where they are from. I just feel sorry for the good people who have to live near that scum.

Might be easier to name the places where people and properties are not listed given the number of places

Why not put them all on the same street and see how they get one with each other?

Or evict them and send they to Selby?

Why are you so suprised? What an awful comment. The areas mentioned make up the entire city. Do you actually know York at all?

I'm on the list and have been since 2009. Why? Cos i play my Erasure records loud and my neighbour grassed me up because he doesnt understand good music. I'm not violent or of danger to anybody. The list is a load of rubbish. Tear it up. Have a little respect.

Have you considered the possibility that your neighbour might just have found them to loud, appreciating good music is just your opinion. You say you play them loud.

You rightly encourage others to have a little respect, but I'm just wondering how much respect you show your neighbour when you play your music so loudly it disturbs him/her. It may surprise you to know that some people value peace and quiet in their own home. I suggest that you grow some respect for others yourself.

I signed up so I could reply to this. The list itself doesn't make me unhappy... its the attitudes people have of such areas and how the list encourages those attitudes. I live in one of these areas. There are some people that spoil it like in all areas... but it really upsets me when people say such nasty things about these areas and 'the people in them'. I live here with my mum and she has worked extremely hard all her life, never had a bad word to say to anybody, and would do her best to help anyone. To hear people talk about how people in these areas are scum, upsets me a lot. Perhaps these attitudes are not shown in the comments here but I have seen so many nasty words on different articles about these areas. I just think it is important to remember most people are lovely, and not living on a council estate because they want to. Sometimes it’s just the way life goes and many perfectly happy with their life in these areas.

Until you turn your music down, you do not deserve any respect.

Hey, I love Erasure but if you lived next door to me and played any loud music when i`m on nights or sometimes up at 5:30 when i`m on days you and me would soon fall out.
This list is compiled because idiots have been abusive or violent to council staff so don`t say you are on it just because your neighbour doesn`t like your music. Tell the truth about your behaviour.

Fully agree also it's only half of the story we don't know if someone was having a horrible situation and someone came and waved a rule book at them without manners that might have set them off.

Apart from Fulford/Heslington and South Bank the areas above make up the entire city.
