Fare deal public transport scheme for under-18s

A SCHEME designed to give young people in North Yorkshire more access to public transport could be extended across the region.

Ride Around For A Pound was introduced in the Craven area as a trial last summer after a petition organised by the Craven Youth Council said young people believed the cost of travelling was hampering their opportunities to find and keep jobs and to visit friends.

It saw bus firms offer a flat £1 fare to under-18s to travel anywhere in the district for a day and led to an increase in passenger numbers, with more than 3,000 tickets being sold. North Yorkshire County Council and the North Yorkshire Youth Council are now hoping to encourage more bus companies to join the scheme.
