York City face Wembley double

York City players celebrate their 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off semi-final York City players celebrate their 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off semi-final

YORK City are just one win away from a return to the Football League after a tense 1-0 play-off semi-final victory over Mansfield yesterday.

Matty Blair headed York in front with just nine minutes of extra time remaining to send the 1,500 travelling City fans into raptures of delight.

The result means City will now be playing at Wembley on successive weekends, first in the FA Trophy Final this Saturday against Newport and then on Sunday, May 20, against Luton Town in the play-off final for the prize of a return to the Football League.

Sophie Hicks, York City’s communications and community director, said: “It was absolutely amazing. We’re just a team that never gives up. We’re just really proud of everybody, and very, very proud to be from York.”

Travelling City fan Matthew White, from New Earswick, said: “No one gave an inch. Mansfield were very physical, whereas our players tried to play it on the ground.

“I was watching through my fingers. It was amazing. I’m going to both Wembley matches now. It means I won’t eat for a week, but I’m going.”

Chris Coxon, from Dringhouses, said: “When it got to extra time, I was thinking ‘how am I going to get through this extra half hour’, but it was just awesome.”

Jason McGill, club chairman, said: “It’s been a long time coming, but a change is going to come. It’s absolutely fantastic. There wasn’t much between the two teams. I can’t say how proud I am of the team and the supporters.”

York travels to Wembley this Saturday to take on Newport in the final of the FA Trophy.

Wow what a match, so proud of the whole team, every player gave their all, Walker could have had a hat-trick. Perhaps his saving it for Wembley ?

What a game! But the resolution and team spirit of one of Bootham Crescents best sides saw York City through to successive Wembley weekends with a single goal from Mattie Blair. Physically they were once again on the receiving end but the discipline was immense. Ingham and the defence were simply magnificent and Mansfield did not create a single match winning opportunity. Mills and his team have done an excellent job on team fitness because City far from fading in extra time took the game to Mansfield. Yes we could have won by another couple of goals towards the end but by this time it was route one for Mansfield in the closing minutes and York coped admirably. Words do not do justice to the way I feel about this superb team which now compares favourably with any side that has graced Bootham Crescent in its long history. With the playing surface at Wembley we could see the City reach its potential. Congratulations to everybody associated with this victory. It would be unfair to single out anyone in the final reckoning.

We will do our talking on the pitch.

Personally I am looking forward to reading the slop you post in your vile forum ''Luscum outlaws'' on Monday 21st may.

Enjoy the next decade in this ''tinpot'' league.

When we beat you this time please go home quietly and don't disgrace your club and town again.

Should be a decent pay day against Luton too. A crowd of (say) 50,000 at £36 a ticket (lowest price) is a lot of cash - even at only 25% cut. Win it and add on the £750k value of L2 and JM can have his investment back. Oh hang on....that would not be good would it!?

Seriously though - win it and its been a fantastic turn around from the dark, Douglas Craig scandal days. Well done team, board and fans. Lets just do that final hurdle and put our club back on the footing it deserves.

Mr G-T, I think these days they are called trolls.

Will they be re-naming Wembley as "Bootham Crescent South" after all number of visits made in recent years?

Fantastic achievement City!!
Great advert for squad rotation & great management.
It will be brilliant to win the trophy on Sat., but the greatest prize will be to defeat Luton (again) and move back into the football league
My greatest wish for the two games is to see composed and clinical finishing by the City strikers.

I see the official City website has announced that City will wear red shirts for the play-off final. I trust they'll be wearing the lucky white shorts as well, otherwise Sir Alex will not be a happy man.
Well done everyone - great performance by our team and our fans.

Now then Dr Bob.....quite true, we do seem to have problems actually beating you I will grant you that.

Us Hatters thought we were doomed to another season down here before Mr Buckle arrived, so we are very happy just to be in this position. I think the pressure is all on York, you are expected to win both games. Certainly, going by the postings on here 'it's our year' etc etc. What happens if you loose twice?

Now Dr Bob, time to get back to work and get them NHS waiting lists down....

I'd like to think we will go into the playoffs with the advantage, having got all our wembley nerves out the way the week earlier. If we can start quickly I can't see us losing...

If York City move to Monks Cross it will kill the club.

Even AndyD says...

Seems to have worked out okay for the dozens of other clubs who've moved out of tow, PENO.
For every Darlington there is a Scunthorpe, Shrewsbury, Burton, Morecambe, Rotherham, Huddersfield showing increased attendances.
Only two I know who have struggled have been Chester (more to do with the owner there) and Darlington with their silly 25,000 seater pipe dream. Neither club saw falls in attendances due to the move and the stats say most clubs see a 20-30% increase at new stadia.
Don't get me wrong, its not an ideal location, but this 'kill the club' thing doesn't match the facts.
