“WATER” time Lord Mayor David Horton and his wife and Lady Mayoress, Jane Horton, had when they took part in the Castle Mills Lock open day.

The civic couple took a ticket to ride the Moon River up the River Foss from its junction with the River Ouse for about an hour.

They were among 30 to 40 people who enjoyed a rare pleasure trip on York’s second river on the broad beam Moon River or a smaller cruiser, Samantha, on Saturday.

The River Foss is navigable as far as Monk Bridge, at the end of Foss Islands Road.

Boat owners can travel through Castle Mills Lock provided they give the lock-keeper Tony Martin and his ten volunteer team of lock openers two days’ notice.

But non-boat owners have to wait until one of the lock’s open days.

Pleasure trips will be available during the Festival of the Rivers in July.

I think the names on the phot must be wrong, or Roy Shilleto is wearing a very fetching red coat.

As far as I was aware the river Foss is navigable as far as Huntington Road / Fossway, whereby beyond this point there is a low concrete pipe bridge and then a weir. I have seen boats on the Foss beside Huntington Road near the iron bridge in the past.
