Two in hospital after caravan explosion

8:50am Monday 7th May 2012

TWO people were taken to hospital with burns after a caravan exploded in Heartbeat country.

A 55-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, both from Whitby, were in a caravan parked at a farm just outside Goathland yesterday morning when it was destroyed by a gas explosion at about 6.45am.

The man was taken to a specialist unit in Newcastle with severe burns and the woman to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The extent and severity of their burns is not yet known.

Firefighters from Whitby, Lythe and Goathland used specialist equipment on a gas cylinder found at the scene to check it and the caravan before declaring the area safe.

They have started a joint investigation with police into the cause of the blast, which is not believed to be suspicious.
