Charity accuses council of cutting road safety budget

TRANSPORT bosses in York last night denied a charity’s claims that they slashed their road safety budget by £650,000 last year.
Figures produced by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said City of York Council’s planned spending on road safety education and traffic management work fell from £1.772 million in 2010/11 to £1.122 million in 2011/12, and said such cuts were an indictment of the risk posed by Government funding reductions.
But the authority said it believed the statistics were “wrong” and said no such cuts were made, although one safety officer’s post is now paid for through the Government’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund rather than the council’s own budget.
Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for city strategy, said: “We continue to provide the same funding for road safety as before and factor road safety into all transport and highways schemes.
“We are also providing extra money to deliver the 20mph initiative in residential streets across York over the next three years, which should help to improve road safety.”
