CITY of York Council has given the go-ahead for the area within York’s outer ring road to be made into an “alcohol exclusion zone”.
The council has approved plans for all of the area within the boundary of the A1237 to be subject to a Designated Public Places Order (DPPO), which will give police the power to seize alcoholic drinks in public places from anyone deemed to be behaving antisocially as a result of drinking.
The matter will now go into a period of public consultation with licensed premises being contacted about the plans.
The order will help police to take alcohol off those acting in a way which could cause alarm or distress to others and will not affect those drinking responsibly, Safer York Partnership said.
Safer York Partnership, which made the proposal, said there are currently 20 alcohol exclusion zones in York, which have displaced antisocial street drinking into neighbouring areas not covered by the order.
Coun Sandy Fraser, cabinet member for crime and community, considered four options to tackle the problems associated with alcohol-related street drinking, before approving plans for an overall DPPO with a boundary of the outer ring road.
Additional orders outside the ring road, such as Copmanthorpe and Strensall, will continue to exist and further orders will be considered if problems arise, the council said.
