THOUSANDS of people have been doing their bit to raise money for Sport Relief.

Events took place throughout York and North and East Yorkshire, with thousands of pounds expected to be raised for the charity.

At Sainsbury’s in Monks Cross, staff and firefighters pulled out all the stops with a fire engine pull across the car park, firefighters washing cars, a penalty shoot out and a zumba workout.

Staff at nearby Sports Direct held a 20-hour 5-a-side football match, a netball match in drag and then organised a school-style sports day at the store over the weekend with egg and spoon races, sack races and three-legged races – all with the aim of raising £1,000.

Tina Bushell, store manager, said: “We knew raising the £1,000 was going to be a challenge but I’m delighted how all out staff and other stores here at the centre have rallied around to help achieve this.”

Meanwhile, members of the York City in the Community Team and some York City Players started the City of York Athletic Club Mile alongside a huge crowds, at Rawcliffe Bar Country Park on Sunday.
