Updated: MOTORISTS who were on one of York’s busiest roads at the time of a fatal crash are being urged to come forward in the hope that they can provide vital evidence to police.

A 38-year-old woman, named locally as Tracey Elmer, died in York Hospital on Tuesday night after being struck by a light blue Renault Laguna as she walked down Wigginton Road, between the Bumper Castle pub and the level crossing.

Police believe the car and the woman were both heading towards the city-centre.

The Renault driver, a 56-year-old man from Midlothian in Scotland, has been arrested and released on bail, and police have appealed for witnesses.

Traffic Sergeant Andy Quigley, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “I would like to speak to anybody who was on Wigginton Road around the time of the collision and saw either the woman, who was wearing dark clothing, or the Renault, which was travelling in a line of other traffic.”

Tributes were paid to the victim on The Press’s Facebook page yesterday.

Becki Harding wrote: “Poor Tracy, not a way to go at all. Love to all the family, RIP cuz xx”. Jackie Robson, wrote: “So shocked RIP xxxxx”.

A member of staff at the Bumper Castle said the road was closed off to traffic for some time after the accident, which happened at 8.40pm. Paramedics were called and the woman was taken to hospital, but she died from her injuries later that evening.

Anybody who witnessed the collision or has any other information which may help the investigation is asked to phone Sgt Quigley on 101.

The stretch of Wigginton Road where the tragedy happened was identified several years ago as one of the worst speeding hotspots in the city after 11 accidents and 15 casualties in three years, including three serious injuries, but there is not yet any indication over the cause of Tuesday’s accident.
