Asbestos pay-out pledge

A GOVERNMENT Minister has agreed to look at whether compensation payments for victims of the asbestos timebomb could be speeded up.

Work and Pensions Minister Chris Grayling was pressed by York Central MP Hugh Bayley to agree to fast-track compensation for victims of mesothelioma, a virulent lung cancer triggered by exposure to asbestos dust.

The Commons plea came after The Press revealed last week that 141 former York carriageworks employees had died from asbestos-related illnesses, according to campaigner Paul Cooper. Mr Bayley said: “ It is vital that financial security is provided promptly for those with the illness and their loved ones because they live on average less than a year after diagnosis.”

Mr Grayling said he was happy to talk to the Justice Secretary about fast-tracking such cases through the courts.
