Bike rack scheme relaunched in York

A SCHEME that provides free bike racks to small businesses has been relaunched in York with the aim of making cycling easier and more convenient.

City of York Council’s Intelligent Travel York programme is working with the social enterprise ParkThatBike to run the scheme, which is funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

The ParkThatBike scheme previously ran in 2010 during the Cycling City York programme. It proved to be popular and cycle stands were supplied to a wide range of organisations.

Peter Andrews, from ParkThatBike, said “It’s great to be working in York again, helping organisations install good-quality facilities. Bike stands in prominent locations raise the status of cycling, deter the thieves and generally make cycling stress-free and more appealing.”

To apply for a pair of cycle stands, visit ParkThatBike.com and download an application form or phone 01594 564344.

Far better of course, if businesses can offer secure and sheltered employee bike parking on their premises, or contract to rent space if available. I understand that Halcrow staff use the Hub Station by Lendal Bridge, on that latter basis. But where space or finance does not permit this, then the scheme highlighted in the news article is a useful option.

or just lock them up outside like i do with my car.....

Businesses do not have to offer car parking therefore should not offer cycle parking, this could in effect breach all car drivers human rights.. be interesting to have a grown up conversation about his..

Sorry Smiler...Paul hasn't grown up yet, he's probably out 'playing' on his bike.

:-)

and i wasn't trying to open the car Vs Bike debate as it gets out of hand.

But i would like a fair playing field! If they build cycle lanes, please also repair potholed roads, if they are going to encourage businesses to provide cycle parking, encourage them to provide car parking. for some of us cycling is not an option on a daily basis, but it is used for recreation.

Useful perhaps to acknowledge that those employees who choose to cycle are helping to create more road and parking capacity for colleagues who need to use a car.

Perhaps not that useful

Employers have been encouraged over the past years to stop encouraging their employees to drive to work, It started with car sharing (never really worked) then promoting public transport (not really public any more as it's a private company) still didn't work as it costs too much and isn't practical for modern life. so now they are encouraging cycling.. the problem lies in a few years when they realise that cycling isn't the answer and ban all wheeled transport and we end up walking everyway.

it's evolution going backwards. we walked, invernted the cycle, then public carriages, trams, cars. then we stopped people using them and made them walk.....

It sounds like you are your own worst enemy smiler. Just imagine what a nightmare the roads would be everyone drove to work in a single occupancy car. York is already total gridlock. I used to drive all over on short journeys but swapped to a bike about 3 years ago. Its been a great decision. The journey times are usually quicker, its often less stressful than sitting in a traffic jam, and it improves your fitness. I still have a car but only use it for longer journeys and shopping etc. I got the bike on the 'bike to work scheme' and the fuel savings meant the bike cost me nothing. I'm not anti car but we need to realise that a lot of the time, a car is just not practical.
Have you not heard of climate change and the fact that cars spew out harmful emissions that are poisoning us all?
Paul might be over the top but his hearts in the right place.

For some people cycling to work can actually be practical, for others is simply isn't.

So what' the problem with promoting cycling to those people where it can be practical. All this effort isn't just for cyclists, the aim is to reduce congestion and help motorists..!! And give PP a break, I am not a fan as he does help himself but you lot are like children.

If you want a grown up conversation then don't make childish comments such as your drivel about breaching car drivers human rights. Idiot!

No mention of parking spaces for "Blue Badge" holders of course It appears that the disabled have to hobble but the cyclists can wobble

Blue Badge holders are the most irritating of all road users. Blue Badges are constantly abused. If I was disabled I wouldn't expect to be able to drive around the city centre at will. A car-free zone should be just that. If you can't get walk 100 yards then you shouldn't be driving anyway.

What about free showers or open air offices for those that cycle to work? The guy in our office stinks!!

I always wondered why PP worked on an open topped bus!
