‘Big Belly’ bin to be used across York

A NEW style bin, which can hold up to eight times as much waste as traditional bins, is to be tested out across York city centre.

City of York Council’s trial of the Big Belly Bin started in King’s Square last August, as part of a de-cluttering and improvement scheme. The bin maximises space through a solar-powered compacter which activates when it is almost full, and is set to be trialled in other areas of the city in the next few weeks.

No... we are all forming an orderly queue to press the compress button on the new bins with your bike in it.

I doubt very much whether PP's head would fit into it...maybe if he took his helmet off first ?

I see no mention of costs?

Stands to reason that a compacting mechanism will be more vulnerable to vandalism than a simple bin (which get a lot of abuse).

...and if its bigger, then it will be more intrusive in our special city.

I thought York was trying to get rid of all its street clutter?

These bins have been trialed by various Councils across the country with mixed results.

Issues relate to initial purchase and maintenance costs (Pointedly not mentioned by the York Council in their media release)

The supplying company (www.bigbellysolar.c
o.uk/) do offer a recycling option but it is big and pretty much unsuitable for most of the York City centre.
