BURNHOLME: Parents tell of devastation and sadness

PARENTS and local residents today spoke of their devastation and sadness over plans to close Burnholme Community College.

Several parents told of their dismay this morning, following yesterday's announcement that the school i likely to shut by 2014.

Jayne Douglas, whose daughters Laura and Amy are former pupils and whose son Tom still attends the York school, said: “I am absolutely devastated. It’s horrible.

“The school could not have been more supportive. I could not have asked for more. I cannot fault the school. It’s been absolutely fantastic.”

She said she thought some people had unfairly looked back to the school’s reputation from many years ago.

She added that her son would complete his education at the school, but with diminishing numbers of fellow pupils each year, and she wondered how this might affect the standard of teaching.

Theresa Sargent, whose daughter attended the school many years ago, said: “I think it’s a shame. I don’t see why it has to shut.” She added that closure would mean local children having to travel much further to get to an alternative school.

Dave Parker said the closure would reduce the number of secondary school options for local children such as his grandson Willem, four. “I think it’s very sad,” he said.

Not if your child goes there, and it's a brilliant school.

Its disgusting that they are closing it. Does anyone know what the school would be used for after it closes? Hope they dont knock it down and build on it. But my guess is they will. It stinks.

Devastation isnt a bit strong, its very true my two children were gutted when they came home from school yesterday, the lady from ycc this morning on radio york stated she didnt want to get into a debate what will happen to the school when it closes well we all know it will get knocked down and built on. They close burnholme then they are taking the heart out of the community

I think its disgraceful, I went there and my eldest son now attends. He found the adjustment to secondary quite hard for the first few months and the school were amazing with the help they offered me and him.
I know several parents that the school has helped their children in so many ways including those who require extra help on the academic side, we are all devastated by this.
The ideal solution would be to keep it open and let the current pupils finish their education rather than years 7 and 8 having to go through the upset of settling into a new school.
And Big Bad Wolf it is devastating for those involved as its a fantastic school.

If we hadn't wasted £20 billion in Afghanistan and billions in Iraq we could easily subsidise smaller schools and class sizes.

This is only being realistic, folks.
Small schools, like Burnholme, and simply unviable.
Larger schools benefit from economies of scale, and therefore are the way forward in this day and age.

what is your problem Wolf??

Why is it so wrong for people to support something they believe in???

And if youre going to say something make it worth reading rather than just negatively commenting on what people write.

Whilst I don't agree with the war in Afghanistan, unfortunately if most councils were given more money history shows us they generally spend it on far less worthy causes than this. At the end of the day if the school is not failing academically why close it? Would it not be better to reduce costs in line with fewer pupils by reducing staff numbers, that has to cost less than closure unless of course the land sale at a later date changes the balance of that equasion, or am I being too simplistic and cynical?

Sorry but Devastating is when a family member dies.. disappointing or upsetting is when a school closes.

I am going to ignore this fantascist Wolf character as he is such a right wing and bigoted war monger as to be unbelievable.

Sadly the likes of him formulate policy regarding how we spend our money as a nation and pursue pointless wars rather than finance good schools.

Sorry newscritic but whilst clearly antisocial I don't think attempting to blow down a house hastily constructed with bricks containing three infant pigs without mechanical aid and eating a teenage girl's grandmother can fairly be labled as "war mongering". Neither can I find any reference to Mr Wolf's involvment in any of Tony Blair's cabinet sofa discussions which were always carefully minuted on the back of a fag packet. Several accounts of Mr Wolf's demise all date back prior to the Labour government mindlessly attacking any foriegn power and include being burnt to death by the above mentioned livestock or dying in an unprovoked axe attack by a man described by witnesses as a "woodsman" with an unhealthy interest in a young girl last seen wearing a red hoodie who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Ps Save our school

Devastation

Pronunciation: /ˌdɛvəˈsteɪʃn/

noun

1great destruction or damage: the floods caused widespread devastation

2severe and overwhelming shock or grief: she spoke of her devastation at his death

"Devastation" seems to be a stock word that people use to describe anything remotely negative. The closure of a school may well be sad, but I'd be surprised if someone were to suffer "severe and overwhelming shock or grief" over it.

You got all that from three short comments he made? Or are you referring to previous comments?
