Next police chief constable on ‘integrity’ tour

Tim Madgwick: To visit command teams Tim Madgwick: To visit command teams

ONE of North Yorkshire’s top police officers is touring the region to drive home the need for “integrity” in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal.

North Yorkshire Police’s Deputy Chief Constable Tim Madgwick – who will become the force’s temporary Chief Constable later this year when the current holder of the role, Grahame Maxwell, retires – is staging visits to safer neighbourhood command teams and is asking officers and staff to be “fearless” in blowing the whistle on rule-breaking.

The message is being sent out following a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary into integrity within the police service nationally and the arrests of five Sun journalists in connection with alleged corrupt payments to police.

HMIC recommended forces and police authorities should put “robust systems” in place to identify and deal with risk posed through relationships between officers and staff from all forces with other parties, and that there should be “clear boundaries and thresholds”.

It said there was no evidence of “endemic corruption” within the police service, but few police chiefs had the issue “on their radar” and there was an inconsistent approach to tackling it.

The report added some forces and police authorities had an “it would not happen here” mentality.

Mr Madgwick’s visits are being carried out until April, and a report which went before North Yorkshire Police Authority’s ethics and standards board this week said: “During these visits, a prominent topic for promotion by the Deputy Chief Constable will be the need for all members of North Yorkshire Police to behave with integrity at all times and be fearless in reporting the conduct of those who do not behave with integrity.”

The police authority report said North Yorkshire Police had “effective existing measures” regarding relationships between its employees and the media and releasing information, as well as over gifts and hospitality.

Are things that bad in the police (the country) that senior officers have to tour round their staff reminding them to have integrity?

There's definitely something missing from this North Yorkshire Police 2012 Integrity Tour subject matter. Whilst events in London which have never occured in North Yorkshire is an essential topic If I were clever enough to be a senior police officer here I'd look a little closer to home for material for my first lecture on lacking integrity in the police force. If Mr Madgwick has a look on Amazon he'll find his outgoing counterpart and his deputy have writted several novels on this subject and how to get away with it.

I watched the programme Coppers on monday night, about a van load of them parading about breaking wind, playing jokes on each other like putting salt in tea etc. Behaving like a bunch of unsupervised pubescent schoolboys.
Integrity ???

If this programme generalises police integrity then its right and proper that a senior officer does the rounds.
The general public must be very assured that they are safe in the hands of these proffessionals.
After 15 mins of this I couldnt watch any more. Disgusted doesnt even hit the spot.

Deputy Chief Constable Madgwick has his work cut out - especially as Hugh Bayley is rubbishing the effectiveness of his force in the House of Commons at the moment.

I have worked in the public and private sector and this type of behaviour goes on in all vocations. Why is it so wrong in the police?

As long as it does not interfere with their doing the actual job. I can understand if they 'broke wind' at something like a sudden death but have you never worked where someone has broken wind?

Just remember who the police are. A cross section of society. Our society!

The opportunities for the type of corruption in London do not exist in North Yorkshire. Tim Madgwick really does not have a lot to worry about in NYorks but has to spread the word after an HMI report.Tim is an honourable man but can't take the job permanently due to crazy Home Office rules. He is experienced in NY and knows the area and the people well so would have been ideal as CC. Again we will have to have someone who just wants a not too demanding CC job somewhere. At least NYPA will not be making the appointment as they have a very poor record appointing Chief Officers who later got into trouble primarily because of their arrogance.I can think of at least 4. Regarding events like " passing wind" etc a bit of harmless banter maintains morale which at present is not high among Police Officers.

Mickrick, it's called humour, having the craic but getting the job done, team work et al, obviously you're not a fan of the police, never had to call them ?. Keep up the good work lads and have a laugh while you are doing it, nothing wrong with that.

Working on building sites I witness quite a lot of the sort of bawdy behaviour of the sort Mickrick is talking about. I don't tolerate it amongst my own staff during work hours though and would be embarrassed if they were to be covertly filmed doing it, if they carried it out in the full knowledge they were being filmed for primetime Monday evening TV I think I'd die of shame at the damage they were doing to our business although I'd accept police officers don't have to worry about that sort of thing as their employers income is guaranteed.

There is plenty of time for horseplay in the pub after work or if you've got every aspect of your work done 100% right and there isn't any more left to do that day. History and my own experience tells us this is not often the case with police work.

I watched that part of the programme Mickrick refers to and my thoughts were, I wonder if the officers involved in my problems were ****ing about like that instead of making basic, simple checks that could easily have prevented the whole saga. My neighbours did witness similar antics which took place over several hours at my property and whilst these officers as N.F.S put it were not attending a “sudden death” I can assure you we found it no less offensive given the supposed seriousness of the situation and the pointless operation’s actual outcome and cost.

Pete, I have said it before, the amount of posts you send, the timings of them and the length of them, really does indicate that your alias belies your trade, either you spend all your time on line in the site office or you are pi$$ing up everybody's back. You obviously have a good sense of humour judging by your witty reposts, so are you not contradicting yourself somewhat.

No, I work a 12.5hr day on weekdays but only pay myself for nine. Whilst I do post a lot it has never affected my work. In any case a bit of lousy pointing caused by using a Blacberry on site is hardly comparable to temporarily ruining a person's reputation by not asking simple questions then having time for pranks and banter in a police uniform.

Thanks Pete, glad someone else watched the gut wrenching spectacle called todays modern police.

Standards have been falling at a rate of knots for the last 30 years.
Today it seems that just about anything goes, and the fact that these officers thought it ok to display that sort of behaviour on mainstream tv is an indictment of what I am saying.
Sadly comments by Willie Eckersley,
Pc 923 and Nfs merely compound my thoughts that this is the case. Those commenters who think that this sort of behaviour is normal and ok in our society are part of the problem not the solution.

I would invite Pc 923,Nfs and Willy Eckersley to think long and hard about what INTEGRITY means, especialy with a bearing on the Police Force, its responsibility to the public and perhaps self esteem.
Possibly a quick look at the english dictionary may suffice.

I'm currently drinking from an NYP mug that encourages me to "Report Corruption & Misconduct" and reminds me that "Integrity Matters".

I nicked it when I worked there.

Madgwick is certainly the right person to conduct an integrity tour. He is facing allegations of corruption in the Grandma B case. Google: "The Abuse of Grandma B"
