THE streets of York were taken over by a colourful parade at the weekend as hundreds of students dressed up to take part in the annual RAG Parade for charity.

University of York students dressed in childhood themed fancy dress to parade around the city centre, with colleges choosing their own themes including Barbie and Ken, Twister, Nintendo and Where’s Wally?

It was hoped the parade, the culmination of the traditional student “raising and giving” (RAG) week, would match the £8,000 raised by last year’s event.

This year’s chosen organisations include Martin House Hospice, the Teenage Cancer Trust, Alzheimer’s Society, War Child, YUSU Voluteering and Refugee Action York. Rebecca Irwin, a parade organiser, said: “It’s a real show of college spirit.

“We have had RAG Week all week and this marks the end of it.

“The atmosphere is always electric. Alot of people say it’s their favourite day of the year.”

Good fun to be sure.
It is a bit cruel of garrowby turnoff to call York Uni half of a great university tho !!
I am of course assuming ,quite rightly ,that he was referring to York St John's as the great uni......
The city benefits from having so many excellent ,yet different ,educational establishments.

Looks like good fun!!! Just remember boys and girls to buy the RAG mag which will help good causes and not the 'gag' mag which is hawked around Coney Street from which not a single penny goes to charity.
