Fears over future of local ward committees

FEARS for the future of York’s local ward committees have been raised by the city’s Green councillors amid spending cuts.

The group’s leader, Coun Andy D’Agorne, said City of York Council’s budget proposals were “misguided” – they earmark a £220,000 saving on ward committees next year and a £54,000 reduction in funding for street environment and enforcement officers.

Coun D’Agorne has also criticised a planned £25,000 cut to the “target hardening” fund, aimed at deterring anti-social behaviour, and a £276,000 reduction over two years for the council’s neighbourhood management unit.

He said: “There are plans not only to severely cut ward committee budgets and street environment funding, but also to cut back dramatically on the number of officers who put into practice the schemes local people have voted for. The ward committee system was a pioneering initiative for which York has achieved national acclaim.

"In recent years, their budgets have been used to support valued local services for older people, young people and families, while targeting local community needs. When draconian cuts are being made across the council, ward committee spending is bound to be affected, but the extent of these cuts is misguided.”

He's right about Ward commitees but understates the size of the cut.

The committees had - after a ballot of residents to establish priorities - £646k to spend this year.

Next year it will be down to £224K, with much of that not likely to be subject to any resident consultation.

They always have been and always will be a total waste of time and money. They con residents into thinking they have choices in spending. They probably cost as much to put on as they spend. What do we elect councillors to do ? Yes............ to make decisions on our behalf on what to spend the cash on. If we don't like it we vote them out. That used to be democracy. What a spineless bunch. If you can't stand the heat................

It is not about how many people vote or attend these meetings. It is the fact that EVERY York resident has a choice to be involved in local democracy.
The leaders are taking away this CHOICE and taking away residents opportunities to challenge elected cllrs.
York is unique in this local democracy style and the ones in charge DONT CARE!!!!!

It maybe unique, but it is not democracy. Time and again people turn up to vote on their little vested interest and then are never seen again. I have even heard people bragging about how they stuffed the meeting with 'their' people to secure a vote on a morsel of funding for their pet project. That is not democracy. Councillors doing the job they are paid to do is.
