MP’s policing budget plea

A YORK MP says cuts to North Yorkshire’s policing budget will “seriously undermine” the challenge of tackling crime in the city.

The Press reported this week that North Yorkshire Police has been forced to earmark £5 million in savings for 2012/13 to cope with continuing Government funding reductions.

In a House of Commons debate this week, York Central MP Hugh Bayley pointed to figures he has obtained showing that crime in York rose to 15,199 offences in 2010/11 as proof that police funding cuts are biting.

He said the statistics flew in the face of claims by Policing Minister Nick Herbert that offences were falling. He said: “It is deeply disappointing that at a time when crime is rising in York, the Government is cutting the number of police officers in North Yorkshire. This is not the way to cut crime and there is a real danger it will continue to spiral upwards. It costs much more in the long run to get the crime figures under control again, and every extra crime means another victim is left counting the cost.”

Presumably the MP will be equally critical of York's Labour Council that has felled 500 street lights since they took over, as well as scrapping Community Ranger security patrols in areas like Westfield.
From April, they also plan to slash £40,000 from crime pevention budgets.

Bayley has some cheek! Has he forgotten that his party's antics while in Govt. led to this whole situation of cuts and the last Labour Chancellor declaring there was nothing left in the pot. What short memories they must have together with skins like Rhinos! What makes people think MP's care for us?

Crime might have gone up in York but it's actually gone down 7% in the county as a whole, a statistic Mr Bayley seems less keen to discuss. While he's in the mood for questions though here's one for the honourable gentleman, Graham Maxwell and Adam Briggs cost North Yorkshire Police at least a quarter of a million pounds between them before retiring on full pensions, as Yorks MP how do you propose to recover it?

Good post Pete the Brickie-In addition to your remarks surely if a Police Officer has reached the rank of Deputy Chief Constable why would he need any development training? Where did the £30,000 plus the £11,000 go? I see the NYPA have denied the policy is wrong!

NYPA gave this training and personal development allowance in order to forward the potential of Briggs. That potential could only have been realised by him becoming a Chief Constable in another force. Where is the benefit for North Yorkshire tax payers in this...? He was found guilty of misconduct and retired early as he knew a storm was coming. He doesnt have the guts to publically refute the irrefutable. He should hang his head in shame. Apparantly he is a coach at Bedale RUFC. If I was a parent there I would think twice of allowing such a disgraceful man anywhere near impressionable youngsters

Where has the £30,00 and £11,000 gone-why is there no criminal enquiry as it looks as if Briggs just used it to supplement his already excessive wages.?

There will be no enquiry as he was allowed to retire before the investigation by the IPCC concluded. He was clearly given the hint by Jane Kenyon and her staff. His was a poor appointment, he was a bullyof the lower ranks and a liability (Nazi clocks in his office, embarrasing performance on Look North etc). Lets hope that other idiot Mike Pannett doesnt get the crime commisioner post cos he's got lots of skeletons in his closet allegedly...
