FIVE decades of happy marriage are being celebrated today by a couple from Pocklington.
Joe and Maureen Teasdale, both 73, met and became friends when they worked at the Co-operative Society in the Clementhorpe area of York more than 50 years ago.
Mr Teasdale said his future wife worked in the bakery and he was a van driver, before he left to do his national service in 1957.
He said: “We knew each other to talk to before I went in the army. When I finished my service I went back to the Co-op because they had to keep your job open - that’s when we started seeing each other properly.”
The couple married in 1962 at St Stephen’s Church in Acomb. Mrs Teasdale later left work to raise their daughters Jacqueline, Maxine and Joanne.
Mr Teasdale said: “I went to work at British Rail Engineering as a fork lift truck driver trainer. Then I retired in about 1991 and we moved to Pocklington.”
The couple, who have a grandson Daniel, said they keep active by walking and visiting the coast. They plan to celebrate with a meal at Lady Anne Middleton’s Hotel in York. Mr Teasdale said: “We discuss everything, decide together and support each other.”
