A YOUNG magician from York is hoping to conjure up the support he needs to make his Britain’s Got Talent bid for fame.

Alfie Whattam, from Rawcliffe, who has been astounding people with sleight-of-hand skills for years, is among 25 hopefuls whose videos have been posted on the talent show’s YouTube page in a public vote to decide who faces Simon Cowell and his judging team. The 15-year-old Canon Lee School pupil’s entry made the shortlist after more than 200,000 people entered.

He said: “I probably want to make it through more than I’ve ever wanted anything, and if I get through, it’s for York. I don’t see myself as a magician, just a normal person who does amazing things.”

The poll closes on Monday and you can vote at youtube.com/britainsgottalent

I can't believe the negative comments I have just read regarding this article.

This is a kid of 15 who at least is enjoying his hobby/doing something with his time and not loitering around on street corners causing problems for people! He is only young and I'm sure is probably relatively inexperienced compared to some other magicians out there, but can we please give him a break and celebrate the fact that he has made this shortlist. I personally wish him all the best.

I'll say it again - I am ashamed to have Alfie G. Whattam representing my profession, my hobby and my city on TV.

There are so many better magicians out there who would do a far better job, and not have to rely on camera angles to make their magic look good.

Such a shame. Hopefully getting kicked off might take him down a peg or two.

Magicman - what pray tell is your profession? Apart from the old job that rhymes with "bucking hunt" that is? Pipe down and stop trolling.

Alfie, good luck young man, York is proud of you and we're cheering you on.

My profession? I'm a professional magician - I perform magic for a living.

Myself and a close circle of friends tried to improve Alfie's performance, and he stole routines from us, and began "get rich quick" schemes online.

If you find anything he does impressive, you need to watch more magic.
