University of York campus parking row rumbles on

Harry Telfer: Said outcome was positive Harry Telfer: Said outcome was positive

PROBLEM parking on residential streets near the University of York has been discussed by residents and ward councillors at a specially-called meeting.

Kate Henderson, who lives in Yarburgh Way, close to the expansion of the University of York, said residents had been told traffic improvement measures were on their way, but it remained an ongoing problem.

Mrs Henderson said: “Some residents have lived there 40 years, and we’re just deluged now.

“Despite the huge university expansion, they are using our road to park on so instead of having the really open space to enjoy in the community we used to have, now we have just got a sea of cars on this narrow road. It’s completely intrusive.”

In July last year, a scheme to ease the parking problem in the area was launched by City of York Council.

Trial restrictions were rolled out across the Badger Hill area of the city while the University of York’s Heslington East expansion was built.

The council confirmed 24-hour waiting restrictions would be put in place at the junction of Deramore Drive and Yarburgh Way, and a road closure at the Badger Wood Walk end of Field Lane service road would be used to create a cul-de-sac.

However, Mrs Henderson said this scheme had not been successful, and the number of cars had not been reduced.

Residents had taken note of some vehicles being left in the area for three and four days, and had received abuse when they had asked people to move their cars.

Harry Telfer, of the Badger Hill Residents Group, chaired the meeting at Heslington Church on Friday. He said the outcome had been largely positive.

Mr Telfer said: “Because of the measures on Deramore Drive, parking has been displaced to Yarburgh Way, and the north side of Badgerwood Walk.

“The residents will respond by submitting a petition to City of York Council requesting that the parking schemes rolled out be extended to the whole of the area.”

A spokesman from City of York Council’s highways development department said some adjustments to the layout of highways had been taken on board following previous meetings with local residents and the Heslington Forum, and more consultation would take place as the scheme continues.

A spokesman for the University of York said: “The University encourages staff, students and visitors to park responsibly. We support City of York Council’s action in introducing measures to resolve parking issues in Badger Hill.”

they stopped the parking at the top of university road and now the cars have moved to thief lane where it is downright dangerous.

Wouldn't it be better to allow the University to provide more parking spaces, rather than playing an endless game of whack-a-mole with the overspill?

Perhaps the Uni should open an outbase in Westminster Road, so that their residents can achieve a long requested point closure.
Mind you one of my nearby local roads has long become a commuter rat run between two radial roads, as drivers swop between then in the folorn hope of finding that one is less congested. Perhaps we could have a point closure as well.
Meanwhile we await the "I pay my car tax" brigade who will doubtless demand that all roads be opened up for them to use.
Thankfully some long term visionaries make alternative travel choices, and this process must be reinforced by restrictions on private car use.

The residents of area s around the University , also want less student housing and HMO's - which means more students are having to live further away and drive in rather than walk . You cant have it both ways ?

Its simple - the Council needs to change it's imposed parking policy on the University ... they then wont have to spend money on changes to roads/restrictions nor waste anymore councillor time on managing the result of their policy ... there is TONS of space at Heslington East or at least the space available to make parking bays

pedalling paul - how dare you push your opinionated, blinkered views on others about how you see the world progressing, forcing people out of cars because you believe that all the traffic problems will be sorted out by it.

Also, and I prefix this with the conditional 'if', IF it is true about your role on a tour bus then you sir are one of the largest hypocrites walking the planet: surely a tour bus is one of the most pointless vehicles on the road?!? It doesn't technically serve a purposeful journey from A to B for anyone, rather it meanders slowly around somewhere whilst someone points at things and speaks about said thing.

Surely, if anyone could have restrictions placed on them, it would be a tour bus - get out and do a walking tour; let's face it, York is not exactly the Atlantic is it? You can walk around it in under a couple of hours I should imagine.

Finally, while I'm at it, what the hell is a 'rat-run', I think you'll find it's a road and yes, we all have a right to use a PUBLIC road for the purpose of which it was conceived!!!

As for the parking, well it's a bit of a grim situation to have loads of cars clogging up the place, so best of luck to the residents and hopefully an agreeable solution can soon be found for all.
