Gun salute marks Queen's Diamond Jubilee

Gun salute in Museum Gardens, York Gun salute in Museum Gardens, York

GUNFIRE echoed around York city centre to mark the accession of The Queen to the throne.

York’s Museum Gardens was one of several locations, including London and Edinburgh, to hold the salute yesterday to mark The Queen’s 60 years as monarch.

The salute consisted of the firing of 21 rounds from three guns at a time interval of 15 seconds by soldiers from 35 Battery, 39 Regiment Royal Artillery.

Brigadier Greville Bibby, Commander of 15 (North East) Brigade, accompanied Kathryn Riddle, chairman of the NHS in the North of England, as she inspected the saluting troop.

A 62-gun salute was staged at the Tower of London and there was a 21-gun Royal Salute at Edinburgh Castle.
