Former chief in bid for top police role

A RETIRED deputy chief constable has become one of the first people in the region to put themselves forward as a potential police commissioner.

Peter Walker is bidding to hold the post in North Yorkshire and has announced he is seeking to be the Conservative candidate in elections for the job.

Local branches of the party are now to consider who they want as their candidate.

Police commissioners will replace the current police authorities.

The role will range from appointing the chief constable and setting operational priorities to setting the budget and precept for services.

It will also entail holding the chief constable to account.

Mr Walker – the chairman of Thirsk Regeneration Initiative – said he had been approached just after the general election to consider running.

“I had a really long think about whether or not to do so,” he added.

“I wanted to consider what the role was, whether people who know me thought I had the right skills, and how I would improve policing in the city of York and county of North Yorkshire.”

Thankfully Graham Maxwell will be leaving before the new commissioner starts, as holding him to account is about as easy as keeping hold of an eel who's been asleep in a bucket full of grease.

I think we're safe. Della is now too busy running the ambulance service.

Peter Walker was a renowned bully of the lower ranks, not respected and prone to feather his own nest in his latter career.

Thanks for your vote Charlie but I'm not qualified for this particular role and I have already managed to achieve limited success in the field of police accounability without leaving my current employment.

Pete. Don't sell yourself short.. But maybe you're right. You've achieved your goals, be it they were limited. Whatever they were? Although I'm sure we'll never know the full story. You've always alluded to the story but never said what.

I believe it was Aidensfield or Ashfordly - some where on the North York Moors with more crime than Midsomer!! Or, was he the bloke who was the author of these fairy tales? Same difference because it will make no difference to the likes of us who the h... he is and this is just another populist move by a PR/Media/Marketing background PM and his government !!!
