HOMES and traffic lights in a part of York were left without power today after a fire started, involving electricity cables.
An underground electrical junction box near Olympian Court, Hull Road, caught light in the early hours and was ablaze when two fire crews from York arrived.
A member of the public had raised the alarm, warning that a manhole cover near the block of flats was on fire.
After the electricity had been isolated by power distribution company YEDL, the fire crew extinguished the blaze.
Power to some homes and to traffic lights in the Hull Road area were expected to be out until mid-morning today as YEDL electricians worked to fix the problem.
A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said a part of Hull Road had to be closed off for a short period while the fire was extinguished, but the road was later re-opened.
A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said the fault, involving underground cables, was reported to them at about 3.10am today and engineers were called to the site.
She said the problem affected power supplies to 137 properties in the Larwence Street and Abbotsford Road area but power was fully restored at about 1.30pm.
"Our engineers are still investigating the cause of the fault and we apologise to all the customers affected for any inconvenience which has been caused," she said.

Doubtless we will read claims that the temporary absence of traffic lights helped traffic to "flow" better.........

A few weeks back the blossom street/nunnery lane lights were out and instead of the regular long queue on every approach, there were no queues whatsoever. I drove straight up to the lights, waved a couple of pedestrians across and then continued straight over the junction. Makes everyone approach junctions a bit more cautiously too, which is no bad thing.

There was almost no traffic waiting. What's the problem with reporting this???

I think it was a power outage too because the street lights were off in that patch too.
FunnyI would have thought the fact traffic lights weren't working around Lendal Bridge/Rougier Street and Station Road/Station Rise since this morning would have been more newsworthy?

Several predictable responses. But what if one of you was a mobility or sensory impared pedestrian trying to get across the road against "flowing" traffic. They don't all carry white canes......
