STAFF at a factory in York have been told they are on 90-day notice, a trade union has said.
The Del Monte factory at Skelton Park on Shipton Road employes about 160 people, and the company this week announced a net loss for the first quarter of the financial year.
Sam Vickers, from the Bakers Food and Allied Workers’ Union, said it was representing 11 of its members at the site, but said discussions as to the exact nature of the notice were ongoing.
He said: “It’s a bit difficult and obviously we’re representing our members.
“I’m not aware of the reason for the notice. I have been informed meetings are going to be held in the future, but we don’t know who is going to be made redundant. A committee has been set up including non-members to discuss the issue.”
The Press attempted to contact Del Monte, but nobody was available to comment.
In 2009, 160 workers at the factory were told they would enter a similar period of consultation, following the loss of a contract, and in October 2008, 20 employees lost their jobs through redundancy.
