A VILLAGE pub could be retained but made smaller, under new proposals by developers.
The School House Inn at Low Marishes, near Malton, has been at the centre of a long-running planning wrangle over plans to turn it into housing.
Matthew and Sarah Richardson originally intended to build a three-bedroom home and a four-bedroom property on the site, saying the pub was no longer commercially viable, but opponents said not enough had been done to market the building and Ryedale District Council rejected the plans.
The Richardsons now want to convert part of the site into a three-bedroom house and retain the rest of the building as a smaller pub.
Their new application says the scheme would save “a community facility”, and make the pub “more efficient and cost-effective”. Mr and Mrs Richardson said that if the plans were approved and the pub was a success, it could be extended into a neighbouring building. Planners are set to make a decision on the issue in March.
