Chance to take a look at Askham Bar Park&Ride plans

PEOPLE who use and live near a Park&Ride site in York will be able to comment on plans to change the road layout for an extended site.

City of York Council’s Access York project secured £22 million in Government funding last year to improve traffic flows in the city, and part of the scheme will see the Askham Bar Park&Ride site, near Tesco in Tadcaster Road, rebuilt to include 1,100 spaces.

Outline details will be available to view and comment on from Monday until February 24, and can also be seen at york.gov.uk

Leaflets will be distributed to local residents, while the proposals will go before the Rural West York ward committee’s next meeting on February 8.

Funding has also been granted for a new 600-space Park&Ride site at Poppleton Bar.

That project includes a proposal to upgrade the A59/A1237 roundabout and provide Boroughbridge Road bus priority routes.

Coun Dave Merrett, cabinet member for city strategy, said: “These new schemes will enable our Park&Ride system to be used by more visitors, improve circulation on the outer ring road, and take a further 300,000 cars off York’s roads.”

..and hopefully introduce park 'n cycle, and cycle n'ride. Not impressed with the severance of the York-Copmanthorpe cycle path by the access road to the new site & hope that it will be signalised for cyclists safety.

The drivers pay the road tax not cyclists, we shouldn't waste money on lights for cyclists, they should stand with their bikes until its safe to cross.

Why waste money signalising for cyclists when they wont take any notice anyway

Ignoring all the Pro/Con cycling comments, has anyone noticed that the roundabout at proposed in 2009 at the entrance to the PnR sides and A64 junctions has now been replaced by the mother of all signalled junctions?

Apart from the impact to free flowing traffic and having engines idling at lights can you imagine what the queues will be like when the lights fail? (and they will!)

...also just noticed that the slip road off the Copmanthorpe Road has been removed as well. I thought was a good part of the 2009 plan because it alleviated additional queuing at the junction. Oh well....

These local roads are managed by CYC and funded from Council Tax income. All national taxes contribute to Mway and trunk road upkeep. Many cyclist users will also be car owners who find pedal power cheaper and quicker for local journeys.Road tax does not exist. The tax is on car ownership.

The A59 park and ride/roundabout scheme will bring welcome relief on the a1237, but is it really the best idea to send lots of buses (presumably including bendy buses) down Poppleton Road?

P+R does need a fairly direct route into town, but sending buses along routes they just don't fit on, is dangerous and causes congestion rather than easing it. Look at the Rawcliffe P+R. Every time a bus stops in Clifton Green the traffic backs up behind it. A big traffic island with railings/lights on it had to be removed at our expense, at the end of Leeman Road. The buses then pass inches from the parked cars in the narrow terraced streets. The bendy buses have to use both carriageways to negotiate the railway bridge and have traffic backed up behind them while they wait. Same problem entering Bootham from the Art Gallery. They have to wait to negotiate the corner, then narrowly avoid cause a head-on collision every time.

Problems are caused when 2 vans have to pass in Poppleton Road, let alone 2 large buses. No doubt the council will ban residents from parking outside their homes. As for the bus lanes, look what a farce the Fulford Road scheme was. Also, will they be actively monitored? I've never been stopped or seen anyone be stopped for cruising up the bus lanes in York in private vehicles. Coppergate is a particularly blatant example. Buses are regularly held up by cars/vans illegally using it as a short cut.

Do not relocate the park and ride anywhere near York College as it would cause chaos. The many "students" have not road sense whatsover.
The college should employ crossing patrols to stop those idiots who walk infront traffic on Tadcaster Road ignoring the traffic lights.

@Casual_Reader - why are you convinced that the traffic lights will fail? It's hardly a common sight in York to see traffic lights dead, I can't remember the last time I did. I doubt it will be much worse than the current setup, where the lights at the bottom of the A64 sliproad seem to be timed as they take absolutely no notice at all of traffic.

@york_chap - there's only one very short section of Poppleton Road that is tight, well under quarter of a mile between Water End and Holgate Park. The rest of the road is a good, wide main road and ideal for large buses including bendies. (Not sure why you're ranting about the problems of sending bendies down Leeman Road when this plan is not sending bendies down Leeman Road). I don't know if it's even been confirmed whether this route will run bendies or not.

Road Tax does not exist. It's called Car tax. Road improvements come out of Council tax and government schemes.

Hopefully you have somebody to care for you as your mind seems to be going. When you send that cheque off to HM Government you may notice it is for Vehicle Excise Duty - the clue is in the inclusion of the word "Vehicle", of which the tax paid is directly proportional to the size of vehicle being driven. This money can be used by the government for anything they like, even for cleaning moats if they so desire.

I would personally not want to see yet another side road junction controlled by traffic lights, as we have too many traffic-light controlled junctions where roundabouts would do the job better. Traffic lights consume energy and there is always a few times every hour where traffic is waiting needlessly, whether it be a dozen vehicles waiting on the main route for just one vehicle exiting the other route, or vehicles waiting for absolutely nothing (hayleys terrace junction springs to mind), and it is these periods of time where petrol is being burned for nothing... at least if you're waiting at a roundabout it is because there's other traffic there!

I envisage that bus priority measures will be needed along the A59 inbound, so that the P&R can offer competitively attractive journey times compared to those by car. This would be similar to the measures on Hull Road. Also the bus fleets are progressively being fitted with "wedding car" technology to give them priority at traffic lights.
Of course all this may lessen peak traffic on Water End and remove the demand to remove a very useful cycle lane.....

Paul ,no problems with promoting cycling however this is about Government funding to improve traffic flows in the city, some 3m has already been spent on cycling provisions.
Working with your assumptions
there will always be the possibility that freeing up road space may encourage additional car journeys.

Traffic lights in York make things worse for traffic flow, if you approach the Holgate road lights from Blossom street the red light stops traffic turning into Holgate rd ,going straight onto the mount, and traffic coming the opposite direction down the mount,in order to let traffic out of Holgate rd turning left towards town and right onto the Mount.
If the very rarely used right turn onto the Mount was taken away traffic coming from Blossom street could be given the green filter at this point and the traffic continuing onto the mount from Blossom street could also have a green light, taking away the backlog of stationary traffic to the Nunnery Lane junction.
In other words allowing the movement of 3 lanes rather then 1 and a rarely used option.
The right turn off Holgate Road is not needed as there is a alternative route via Dalton terrace.
