Crackdown on illegal street traders in York

A NEW crackdown on illegal street traders in York is to be launched.

Trading standards and licensing officers have received a string of complaints, and Coun Sandy Fraser, City of York Council’s cabinet member for crime issues, will now be asked to approve an amended enforcement policy.

He said: “Illegal street-trading undermines legitimate business activities in York and gives the perpetrator an unfair commercial advantage and damages the reputation of our city.”

The issue will be discussed on February 7.

how hard can it be.one man can patrol the whole city centre in 10 minutes and the traders can hardly run away.just get it done.

Why do we have to have crackdowns when these things should have been done as a matter of course.

Because we have just about the worst police forces in the country. They are a complete and utter joke.

The council enforce street trading not the police. All the street traders in the city centre are licensed and pay fees to the council. What I would like to know is, where are these so called illegal street traders. If any are there I'm sure the city centre council officials and licensing officers would be immediately there.

Oh gosh, how unfair this traffic is. we have a super police force, give them a break, its a difficult job. They are constrained at every level by rules and regulations, we need to lket them know they are valued and appreciated- we have the safest town in england, thank you polce for this. And yes, please focus on the illegal traders and beggars, that would be good.

This afternoon on Coney Street, a man with a mess tin, was selling stupid little furry things that made an equally stupid noise. Not wishing to dig out York Police, but I am working on the assumption (I could be wrong) that this chap was an illegal street trader. So the question is why could a police officer not ask to see his license or a council official not do the same?
Its not like he was in hiding was it .

The one's who really cheese me off are the ones selling the 'gag mag' on Coney Street. You tell them politely that you do not want to buy the 'mag' and they hassle you and accuse you of not having a sense of humour. They even claimed once that they represented the 'Uni' which they clearly don't. The I.D. they have is a Money Shop card which you can get when you regularly cash cheques at that business. I have reported them to Trading Standards and the Police but nothing seems to have changed except the people selling them!!!!

Yes I do. Sometimes it was 10, 8 or 6 lighters. It probably depended on how much he needed the cash.

Not seen him for a few years now.

The best way to catch illegal street traders is to send out a whole load of illegal council officials. There must be plenty of them around.
