A LEVEL crossing failure has caused traffic to build up near Selby this afternoon.
The railway barrier, at Woodhall Lane, to the east of the town, happened at about 3.10pm, when the barriers became stuck in the down position, cutting off vehicular access to the crossing.
Network Rail engineers were sent to the site, and a spokeswoman said the cause of the fault was not yet known, but they hoped to have it repaired as soon as possible.
British Transport Police and North Yorkshire Police have worked together to help manage traffic buildup, and all train services using that stretch of track have been advised to run at slower speeds than normal, although this is not expected to lead to any delays.
Motorists are advised to find alternative routes wherever possible.
