A £4.6 MILLION scheme aimed at improving transport and easing congestion in York has been unveiled.

The launch of Intelligent Travel York comes after City of York Council secured Department for Transport funding for developing schemes to boost walking, cycling and public transport.

It follows on from the Cycling City York initiative and its goals will be to cut congestion, reduce CO2 emissions and benefit York’s economy, with major employers and the voluntary sector playing a part, and match-funding opportunities for schools and business.

Coun Dave Merrett, the council’s cabinet member for city strategy, said: “Tackling congestion and making it easier for people to travel in and around York is one of our key priorities.”

From their web site:

"The primary focus will be the northern quadrant of the city where there are high numbers of short car trips to employment and retail destinations."

So that's £4.6 million of taxpayer funding to help reduce the problems introduced by short car trips to employment and retail destinations like Clifton Moor and Monks Cross.

Morons.

I always thought a newspaper was meant to be informative - there's not even a summary of the scheme; and the linked to web addrss is even less informative.
Please note Mr./Ms Editor: you wasted ink, a reporters valuable time and salary and our's too as we gasp at the lack of information.

web link now works and says:
The programme will reduce congestion and its impact on the environment and enhance the city's prosperity and growth potential. It will deliver an integrated programme of personal, business and school travel planning combined with targeted infrastructure enhancements to increase people's travel choices.

So there you have it... motherhood and apple pie, but in reality it means working to make it easier to get from A to B without the infernal combustion engine! If you dont like that then go and find a nice traffic queue to sit in somewhere else, using up fuel and your hard earned cash and let the rest of us cooperate on sharing our roadspace sensibly causing the minimum pollution possible.
