Queen to visit York

NEWS that the Queen is to visit York Minster has been welcomed by church and civic leaders.

As revealed on this website this morning, the Queen will distribute the Royal Maundy at the Minster on April 5.

The Dean of York, the Very Reverend Keith Jones, said staff at the cathedral were ‘thrilled’ the Queen had chosen to perform the annual ceremony there in her Diamond Jubilee Year.

“The Queen has asked that representatives from all over the United Kingdom should be included in the Royal Maundy this year, alongside the recipients from the Diocese of York, and there will be a special air of thanksgiving for her long reign,” said the Dean, who retires just weeks after the service on Thursday, April 5.

“There is so much excitement centered on London this year that it’s great that York will once again be the place for this Royal and beautiful ceremony.”

The last time the Queen distributed the Royal Maundy in York was in 1972, and he said: “This year Her Majesty’s visit also coincides with the 800th anniversary of the granting of the City of York’s charter, which adds to our delight.”

The Lord Mayor, Coun David Horton, said he was ‘honoured and delighted’ the Queen would be coming in such an important year, both for her personally and for the city.

“York has a long association with the British monarchy and I’m sure residents will provide a fitting welcome for the Queen,” he said.

The monarch is expected to enter the city in traditional fashion at Micklegate Bar, where she will be greeted by the Lord Mayor and York’s first female town clerk - council chief executive Kersten England - before going to the Minster for the service.

York council leader James Alexander said he was ‘delighted and honoured’ the Queen had chosen to visit York in her Diamond Jubilee year and both York's MPs, Hugh Bayley and Julian Sturdy, also welcomed the news.

April's visit will be the Queen's first to York since Royal Ascot in 2005.

Good stuff. I remember waving my flag at her as a child in 1977. We've both aged a bit since then, me more so I'm guessing!

Great news for the city, will be interesting to see the comments today especially after the slating CYC got last year for "not inviting" The Queen to the city as part of "our" and "her" celebrations.
I believe a member of the public invited the Queen himself, he then went running to The Press saying how he couldnt believe CYC hadnt wrote to invite her blah, blah, blah.........when all the time CYC had!

There will certainly be plenty of opportunity. Details will be released much closer to the day, but what usually happens is she arrives on the royal train, then makes her way to the Maundy service for a late morning start. Afterwards there will be a luncheon for the great and good. Finally, there is usually a visit to a hospital or school.

Kate Middleton and her sister Pippa would have been just fine. However, very nice of the Queen to turn up all the same. Attention starved human beings need 'I was there when' memories and this should satisfy that need.

Perhaps as a celebration and as way of an offering to Her Majesty, we should burn James Alexander in celebration?

There isn't a great deal of funded need for this, except for security. Which comes from NYP and central funds.

Any Monarchist wouldn't be complaining about this, the Labour & Greens should be the ones stopping it.

There is no room for an such an outdated concept as the monarchy within our society. Admittedly some of the younger members of the Windsor family do make a contribution to society by their professional and/or charitable roles but they are, for the most part, a drain on the public purse.

On hah bl@@dy ha! Presumably she'll enter via Micklegate Bar. Last time she came, I sneaked out of my nearby office to watch her arrive. Unfortunately I got myself in a York "Press" picture (front of crowd). Went into work next day and it was up on the wall for a "Spot the Paul" competition.

Given that it was King John (an unfairly maligned monarch in my view) who granted us our Charter in 1212; perhaps CYC could petition the Vatican (the good old CofE being a bit backward in coming forward in the matter of sainthood - with the notable exception of Charles I of course) to canonize (or at least beatify) said monarch. Then his mortal remains could be exhumed from Worcester Cathedral and translated to York Minster in time for the Royal visit. Okay ... so we do have our very own St William of York in the crypt but, when all's said and done, he's a bit of an "also ran" by comparison!

Great news... especially after the previous reports in December of 2011 that HMQ would not be visiting York in its 800th aniversary year of the granting of the city's Royal Charter.

Then, Buckingham Palace was quoted as saying "her programme for next year is already settled".

Change of mind?
