A COMMUNITY cinema created by a group of volunteers in York has celebrated its first birthday.
Organisers of the South Bank Community Cinema came together in autumn 2010 to try to create a unique film experience at the newly refurbished Clements Hall in Nunthorpe Road.
“Seating is cabaret-style, at tables with tea-lights, and there is an interval of 15 minutes, so that audience members can chat to each other,” said spokeswoman Linda Speidel.
“There is a bar staffed by Clements Hall volunteers. Screenings are fortnightly and in 2011 we showed 20 films in our main season, with a few additional screenings for special events.”
She said the new 2012 season started tomorrow with Bienvenue Chez les Ch’tis, with doors opening at 7.30pm and the film starting at 8pm, and entry costing £3 for members and £4 for non-members/guests.
She said the cinema had about 160 members paying £5 and usually had audiences of 60-70 people.
