A HIGH-FLYING goat has been honoured with promotion by the RAF squadron which took him on as mascot last year.

A recent ceremony at RAF Leeming saw Jeffery the Toggenburg goat awarded the title Flying Officer. He was also made honorary First Lieutenant of the American Airforce, thanks to a visit from Major Snedeker, of the US Air Force, who presented Jeffery with his new badges of rank.

Jeffery, whose usual home is at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming near Murton, greeted guests of 609 Squadron after Friday’s ceremony, before tucking into a celebratory cake, made especially for the occasion.

Jeffery was originally appointed as Cadet Officer in early 2010.

The squadron’s Flight Lt Alfie Hall saw his picture on a museum leaflet and noticed a resemblance to William de Goat, the squadron’s mascot during the Second World War Two. Jeffery was duly appointed official mascot and has since risen through the ranks.
