Family Bargains shop to open in Clifton Moor, York

Hussein Lalani Hussein Lalani

A NEW bargain shop will create up to 35 new jobs in York, and give residents the chance to buy their weekly shopping for less.

Family Bargains, the first of its kind in North Yorkshire, is part of the 99p Stores Group, which has 142 stores across the UK. It will open at the Clifton Moor Retail Park in two weeks.

Hussein Lalani, 99p Stores Group Commercial Director, said: “When we first started expanding a few years ago the customers’ Mercedes used to be hidden blocks away and the wealthy came in pretty much heads down. Now it’s more heads held very much high, though we don’t know whether this would apply in York.”

The company have said York is one of its “most wealthy locations” for a new store, after other branches opened in the Cotswolds, St Albans and the New Forest, but on previous occasions, residents in affluent areas had said their towns and cities were “too posh” for the bargain store.

Mr Lalani said: “Posh products? Absolutely. Posh prices? Absolutely not.” He said the shop would offer more than 8,000 different products in the 15,000 square-foot former Storeys Carpet store. The new Family Bargains will employ about 35 people.

There are two 'pound' shops in town already, and some fool has opened one at Monks Cross.

Amazingly, here's someone who does value punctuation and grammar, yet having been to a branch elsewhere, looks forward to this shop's opening. It has a large range which only partially overlaps the 2 existing pound shops.

I look forward to visiting infrequently, twice a year should suffice to remind me why I don't bother more often. I will inevitably spend a long time queueing at the one open checkout, tutting and looking around for anyone who gives a monkey's, eventually leaving with an enormous multi-pack of kitchen rolls, turkey foil and some cocktail sticks.

To be honest, most people don't do their weekly shops in these £1 or equivalent stores but go to buy the occasional bargain or to buy random stuff- great if you're having a party or want light hearted jokey presents!

Everybody likes a trip to poundland no matter how rich you may be...

I know that York thinks that it's too posh for discount shops, but surely it's better to open them at Clifton moor than in the centre itself? Why are you arguing about providing consumer choice anyway? People will use it and if not, it will shut down!

I'll be interested to see what it's like. Pound stretcher always seemed to stock a lot of junk and although poundland's range is good, I've never found it to be that amazing.

I'm glad they're keeping it out of town though. While there is a place for city centre discount stores, that place is Preston.

As for those who are unsure what the store will sell, just look at the picture. Floor to ceiling "cloko cakes" by the look of things. I suspect there may also be lots of hair gel on sale, but probably no ties.

A) I'm intelligent and like grammar more than most.

B) I shop in pound shops a lot because if I want to buy a drink of lemonade, why should I pay more for the same thing?

C) This seems like an odd place to put it, given its close proximity to Home Bargains, which is better.

What a shame.
Can't we get them to relocate to Monks Cross? Looks like a good place to get pop and sweets before the match.
I actually think they'd do better in the city centre as most of their trade is probably one-offs rather than regular purchases. Therefore footfall will be important.
Of course the snobs won't be seen anywhere near but their patronage supports other establishments so everyone should gain.
If the business is viable and offers a service to its intended market - good luck -especially if it creates employment.

you genius. complaining about a shop because you choose to buy tat from it? if you actually knew what they sold then you might go into the shop with a purpose, but anyone who goes into a shop without knowing what they want to buy is a div. it's like going to a sports shop and complaining that they don't sell the drink you want.

I have never heard of this chain of stores. Shame that once again it's all the way over at Clifton Moor. Monks Cross would be very useful, or the city centre. The main problem for shopping is that it's all within a triangle (City Centre, Monks Cross, Clifton Moor) and places outside of the triangle don't really have anywhere decent to shop... you get the odd rogue store that is set up outside of the triangle (tesco at askham bar, b&q at osbaldwick) but those stores which may have been built to trigger a development never saw anything else get built by them, with companies preferring to stay within the established triangle.

When I'm over clifton moor way, I may go into that shop and see what they've got.

'was Rotherham now York' we are not all the same, some of can actually spell and punctuate. We were not all brought up the same way. Shame you can only have a go at people, you bully.

I use these shops, there is nothing wrong with them. If you want to pay Tescasdabury's and help them grow then that's your choice.

As for someone not being able to punctuate and spell why not offer a few lessons instead of ripping into people's good intentions?

I lived close to Balham, in London, and over there is a 99p shop... very similar to Poundshop. I have read Mr Lalani has a lot of them: the last 5-6 years have seen a lot of bargain shop opening. And some very nice shops closing down. People cannot spend too much money in some area of England. That's the life.
Anyway visitors come in the centre of York to see this lovely city where me and my family decided to move in since March. We are going to open a shop... hoping it will be its uniqueness to attract tourists and residents.
Sometimes I bought items in 99p or Poundshop... it depends what you buy, but honestly the quality is very low and poor.

I was surprises and astonished to see Poundland in Low Petergate. Lot of unanswered questions in my mind. Some answers left me gutted (most products came from factories abroad, with employees that have poor working conditions). But apart this, sometimes people see the diffence buying 4 cokes at £1 in ther than just 1 at £1 elsewhere in the same street.
But for most of the stock you see the difference in terms of quality: I bought the transparent punched pockets, in both Poundland and Staples...and I had to throw away those from the cheap store.

I would have the comma after 'yet' not before, another comma before 'which', and the '2' has to be written as 'two' surely? Sorry, but if you are going to put yourself forward as one who values punctuation and grammar...

I work in one of the bargain shops in that specific end of Clifton Moor. There is nothing wrong with the products and you get things cheaper. People are idiots for thinking that Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Morrisons have more quality, when really they are hiking up the price. So what if they are packaged in German or Arabic or any other language for that matter, they are still the same product but because those certain countries shop's have overstocked, we have got them at a wholesale or reduced price. All products are in date when they are sent so again there is nothing wrong with the products.

And for those people who think that people are thick or not as good as you because we either shop or work in those shops, would you believe I am not stupid and I am not a "Chav". Infact would you believe that I am a normal 20 something year old who wants to teach primary and secondary school children in my career, but unfortunately, with the times we're in now, I cannot afford to fund college or university courses and the only way to fund that is working anywhere I can, and also shop anywhere I can to make ends meet.

All I have to say is, stop judging everyone else, and all those who are slating Poundshops and bargain shops, you know of them, you know where they are and you've all shopped there, so stop being hypocritical about everyone else when your exactly the same as them. Money doesn't mean you actually have any authority over others.

swh1963 says...
9:20pm Fri 4 Nov 11

Well said GothicGirlYork - some people are ashamed to admit they shop at certain places but I'm proud to say I shop anywhere that gives me a good deal. That includes the pound shops but also Armani (in the Designer Outlet) where I got a great jumper reduced from £129 to £9. I hope you get to teach - people can learn a lot from you :)

TheYorkRose says...
8:25am Sat 5 Nov 11

Half of the time they're the exact same product anyway - I've always gone to Home Bargains or poundland to get a drink because it turns out that 30p for a bottle of coke/lemonade is better than the £1.29 that WHS is charging for the *same product*.

Bargain shops are good competition for most places, and they also have a few surprising products you can't get elsewhere. Sure, some things aren't as good - I bought a few sets of earphones from Poundland and most didn't last too long - but then spending £15 on the same thing isn't worth it. I'm not a fan of Aldi or Lidl, but I know lots of people who use them all the time. York's upper-middle class attitude of 'things that are cheap are worthless' is pathetic!

GothicGirlYork says...
