FIREWORK displays are set to light up the sky this weekend as the region celebrates Guy Fawkes night on Saturday.

The Global Centre, in Boroughbridge Road, York, is promising a “spectacular” event for all the family.

The centre, which is based in the old Manor School building in York, will be open from 6pm on Saturday with the display beginning at 7.30pm. Admission for adults is £5, children £2 and parking is £2.

Meanwhile, Greenfields School & Community Garden in York will host a bonfire, between 5pm and 7pm. Entrance at Greenfields YO31 8LA, between Rose and Vyner Street. All 3,250 tickets for the event at The York Maze at Elvington have been sold, say organisers.

Ryedale residents can enjoy a bonfire and fireworks display from 5.30pm on Saturday at the Brooklyn Youth Centre in Norton near Malton. The bonfire will be lit at 7pm with fireworks starting at 7.30pm. Entry is £5 for adults, £4 for children and under-fours go free.

In Selby there will be a community bonfire and display at Scott Road Community Centre, from 6.30pm. Money raised will go to the Marie Curie Nursing Service in Selby. Fireworks will be set off in two sets. The first at 7pm will be quieter fireworks and the second, at 7.30pm will have the “bangs and whistles” according to organisers.

In Harrogate, the town’s Round Table will host its 40th annual bonfire on The Stray, from 6.30pm.

Thirsk’s bonfire and fireworks display will be on fields in Newsham Road. The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm with the fireworks following shortly after.

The Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, will be celebrating Guy Fawkes Night this year with the residents of Thornton-le-Clay, whose bonfire and fireworks display will be raising funds for the Lord Mayor’s Charities.

The bonfire will be starting at 6pm, with fireworks from 6.30pm, at Low Street, Thornton-le-Clay. Entry to the bonfire will be £6 per person, with under 14s admitted free if accompanied by a paying adult.

Scarborough’s bonfire and firework display will be at Burniston Road car park. Bonfire lit 6.15pm, firework display 7.15pm.
